ZARATE’s wines and eaux-de-vie are made with the loving care and rigour of a family driven by a passion for wine and above all by its dedication to the indigenous grape varieties of the Salnés Valley in Rías Baixas.

Eulogio Pomares, a member of the family’s third generation of growers at ZARATE, runs the estate today, carefully preserving the 16th century property and tending the estate’s vineyard. His constant aim over his two decades so far at the estate has been to develop his understanding of the different Salnés terroirs and grape varieties and to seek out the optimal vinification that will express the individual character of each soil.

The main grape variety we grow is Albariño. Over the last years we have begun re-establishing in our vineyards indigenous red grape varieties of the Salnés valley: Caiño Tinto, Loureiro Tinto and Espadeiro, that had been forgotten about for over a century.

ZARATE is currently growing 6.54 hectares (16.15 acres) of vines, which are divided up into 11 plots in the areas of Sisán and Padrenda.

We also produce eaux-de-vie and traditional Galician liqueurs from our grape pomaces and wines in copper stills. These products are produced by distillation and maceration using natural products only, and with the handcrafted skills of eau-de-vie makers handed down over generations.
